Tracing Roots: Black Social and Ancestral Dance in Contemporary Paris
By Feyikemi Poitier
This summer, I am thrilled to embark on a transformative journey through the FSU International Programs Dance in Paris initiative. Under the mentorship of Professors Kehinde Ishangi and Kara Wilkes, this four-week program offers a unique opportunity to immerse myself in Paris's vibrant dance culture.
My project, "Tracing the Roots," aims to explore the profound connections between Black contemporary dance and its ancestral origins within Paris's multicultural landscape. By engaging with local dancers and choreographers, I seek to understand how traditional movements are reimagined in modern performances, reflecting both heritage and innovation.
To document this exploration, I will create a series of short vertical videos capturing classes, performances, and interviews. These will be shared on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, serving as educational resources that highlight the resilience and creativity inherent in Black dance traditions.
Guided by Professor Ishangi's extensive experience in Black contemporary dance, I will conduct archival research and participate in various dance workshops throughout Paris. This hands-on approach will provide invaluable insights into the evolution of dance forms and their role in cultural expression.
Through "Tracing the Roots," I aspire to contribute to the broader discourse on Black diasporic identity and heritage, amplifying underrepresented voices in the dance community. This project is not only a personal journey but also an endeavor to celebrate and preserve the rich tapestry of Black dance in contemporary society.
