Independent research - SDG 3: "Good Health and Wellbeing"

Biography

My name is Ali Krebs, I am from upper Westchester, New York. I am a senior at the State University of New York at Oneonta. I began with studying exercise science but found myself getting involved with the philosophy department so much so that I decided to pick up a double major. I usually spend my free time with friends, reading, hiking, or dabbling in creating art and music. I’m most passionate about traveling and learning about the world around me by experiencing it to the fullest. After I graduate, I plan to pursue graduate school within the scope of sports performance or physical therapy... ideally travel PT to achieve my dreams of experiencing life in many different cities!

Project

Dancing for Good Health and Wellbeing
This research proposal consists of discovering how dance can be used as a therapy for mental and physical health and to understand how Tango is a community practice in Manizales, Colombia. It focuses on exploring the issue presented by SDG 3: “Good Health and Well Being” which connects to exercise science. I  examined this topic through the discipline of dance. This research aimed to explore the different contexts of dance in human life and community practices using Tango as the case study for my research. This topic is relevant to the wellbeing of humans because exercise is essential to human health. My research  examined ways people incorporated physical activity and enjoyment into their lives through dance. Tango was adopted as a cultural expression that migrated from Argentina to the Andes, Coffee regions. I intended to discover the importance of this dance within the community, as well as a recreational means of exercise and well-being. I traveled to Colombia for 10 days and conducted interviews to different groups of people in Manizales, Colombia.
