Project

Investigating the Role of Traditional Weaving Workshops in Reducing Gender Inequality and Advancing Women’s Economic Empowerment
During my time in Peru, I explored how traditional weaving workshops empower women and preserve cultural identity in the Andean highlands. My project aimed to understand the connection between craft, economic opportunity, and social resilience. Guided by the question, How do community-based textile practices support women’s independence and cultural continuity? I conducted ethnographic fieldwork, including interviews and participatory observation with local artisans in Andahuaylillas and neighboring towns. Through this process, I discovered that weaving is not only a source of income—it is a form of knowledge, creativity, and collective strength passed down through generations. The women I met taught me that innovation can come from honoring what already exists. Their work demonstrates how tradition can serve as a pathway to equality, especially when supported through local entrepreneurship. This experience reshaped how I think about engineering, design, and global development, reinforcing my belief that meaningful solutions begin with listening and collaboration across cultures.
