Physical Vs. Digital Exhibition Spaces: Where does the future lie?
The arts have been moving readily towards the digital realm, but the question is how far is too far? Is there still a future for physical media in a world which is drifting further and further from it? I honed in on Photography as the artistic mode because it is one of the youngest art forms whose history I have become very familiar with. It has also seen an uptick in digital distribution, perhaps more than any other artform, with the advent of sites like Instagram. In order to explore this question I travelled to foremost exhibition spaces in Paris, France. Paris is the epicenter of so much Photo history and its exhibition spaces reflect that longevity, there is such a breadth of works both old and new to be seen in most exhibition spaces. In diving into these spaces I found that my original goal of comparison was misguided. The strongest exhibition spaces in general were those which meshed both worlds together. The future of exhibition spaces should, in the perfect world, embrace the individual capabilities of both exhibition styles.
